A lot of MVPs “fail” in a quiet way. The team ships something that looks good, the tech is solid, the vision slide is inspiring… and then almost nothing happens. A few people sign up, click around and disappear.
It’s not a dramatic explosion. It’s a ghost town. The servers are running, the ads are live, but the user session logs are empty. This silence is more dangerous than bad feedback because it teaches you nothing.
Most of the time, it isn’t because the team is bad or lazy. It’s because the first set of features didn’t give early adopters a clear, fast win. The product was built for the long-term vision, not for the people who are brave enough to try version one.
This blog is about fixing that gap: how to decide what belongs in your MVP so that early adopters don’t just sign up - they stick, use and talk.
“Early adopters” isn’t a fancy label for “all potential users”. It’s a very specific slice of your market:
Before we talk about features, we map this group clearly. A simple template we like:
Now connect that to Vision: Vision: “Help small teams run experiments 10x faster.”
Early adopter problem: “Right now, they can’t even run one experiment cleanly without getting lost in tracking.”
That’s the level of clarity you want. From there, you can write a simple hypothesis:
“If we let growth leads set up and measure one clean experiment end-to-end, they’ll see enough value to adopt our product.”
Everything in the MVP should exist to test that statement. This is where Riskiest Assumption Testing (RAT) comes in. Ask: What must be true for this to work?
For example: “They’re willing to connect their analytics tool”, or “Our results will feel more trustworthy than their current reports.” The features that test these assumptions early are the ones that matter most.
Early adopters don’t fall in love with sign-up. They fall in love at first value the first moment they feel something like: “Oh. This just saved me time / gave me clarity / removed a headache.”
That moment looks different depending on the product:

This shifts conversations from “Should we build feature X?” to “Will this feature help more early adopters reach first value faster?”
Once you know your early adopter and your first value moment, you’ll still have more ideas than you can build. To keep things sane, we use a four-bucket model.

To put features in the right bucket, we lean on a few very lightweight tools:
Value vs Complexity
Sketch a 2x2: impact on first value (low → high) vs effort (low → high). High-impact / low-effort features are your sweet spot.
Opportunity Scoring
For each step in the value path, rate:
High importance + low satisfaction = strong candidate for v1.
Task-to-Value Mapping
Take the concrete tasks users perform on the way to first value (“Upload data”, “Choose template”, “Share result”) and make sure each has at least one supporting feature. If a feature doesn’t map to a task, it’s probably “later”.
Two simple questions keep the team honest:
If the answer to both is “no”, it doesn’t belong in the MVP.
Imagine a founder who wants to build a “growth command centre”: dashboards, cohort reports, AI suggestions, collaboration across teams the works. When we map their early adopter (growth lead in a small SaaS team) and their value path, we find the real first value is much simpler:
“Run one clean A/B test and see a trustworthy result.”
Using the approach above, the MVP ends up looking like this:

The founder’s favorite ideas AI copy suggestions, cohort analysis, multi-team workspaces move to “nice-to-later”. Now early adopters can get value in a few days, not months and the team can see from real usage which “big” features deserve to be built.
Prioritization doesn’t stop when you ship. Launch is the start of the feedback loop. With the MVP in the wild, watch:

If you can honestly say “yes” to those, you’re not just building an MVP for the sake of it. You’re designing a focused first version that gives early adopters a real reason to bet on you and gives you the learning you need to build something truly worth scaling.
